The following haiku have been submitted by grade 7 and 8 students from Mullewa DHS, a school in the Murchison area of Western Australia.
In the Wajarri language, a Garagula is a native banana passionfruit, Bimba is the golden-coloured sap from the Acacia tree and a Jindi-Jindi is a Willy Wagtail.
Garagula, sweet ripe
I eat the silk soft skin
sour on my tongue
—- Kelsiarna A.
sunshine on the trees
Bimba off the rough branches
all friends are golden
— Tanya W.
Jindi-Jindi
hops around the water
drinks its reflection
— Asanchia W.
wildflower seeds
die, come back
everlasting
— Taelarni M.
emus drink water
their voices thump as footsteps
river runs, birds fly
— Tamryn G.
koi fish in darkness
swim against the current
still … they get there
